Program Director Message
Welcome and thank you for your interest in the Immunology Residency Training Program at Shifa International Hospital. I am proud to be running this highly competitive and highly desired residency program. Our aim is to provide training of the highest quality through hands-on experience leading to emergence of qualified academic professional who later can produce safe, internationally accepted immunology laboratory results in area relating to solid organ transplants, bone marrow and stem cell transplants, immune deficiency diseases, autoimmune disease, allergy and para-protein related diseases. Not only this, the trained individual is motivated to develop with great interpersonal skills to rationally efficiently interact with colleagues practicing the art and science of medicine in the relevant fields.
The aim of our residency program is to train residents in the art and science of Immunology through a comprehensive and well-rounded balance of structured education, laboratory and clinical experience and research. The primary goal is to train competent Immunologists who will be well-prepared to pass their Final Fellowship examination in Immunology, be safe enough to act as a consultant immunologist in a hospital based laboratory or at an immunology laboratory in a tertiary care center. These specialists will be sufficiently academically equipped for further training towards either sub specialization or a teaching career. The ultimate goal is to produce excellent, ethical immunologists capable of providing a primarily diagnostic service for a wide spectrum of problems relating to immunodeficiency diseases, autoimmune diseases including connective tissue disorders, allergy, Para protein related problems, immunophenotyping related services and transplant related services. These specialists will be expected to function at a superior level of competence throughout their careers, become leaders in their field of interest, and further the course of the specialty of immunology. The philosophy of the program is founded on the principle that the patient’s interest is paramount in clinical teaching and medical practice.

The training is going to be a combination of didactic lectures, Laboratory demonstrations, rotation through Allergy and Immunology and Rheumatology clinics, clinical case discussions and supervised laboratory experience.
Training Year wise training objectives for skills and knowledge will be followed as defined in the booklet prepared for Immunology FCPS training by CPSP.
Each resident does an average of one night in four on-calls within the Hospital premises, although occasionally one night in three or two may be necessary.
- Residents are evaluated by faculty every month, based on their rotation. Feedback is provided by the Programme Director and Coordinator, every 3 months.
- Annual TOACS and Year end PGME exams are conducted. In addition, formative assessments based on assorted topics may be arranged every 2-3 months.

All residents are encouraged to get involved in audits and research projects, however research project as per CPSP requirements is mandatory for all.
