Neonatology Program
The Medical Education department under the leadership of the Director works to ensure that our system of postgraduate medical education is established according to the internationally acceptable criteria and meet all the requirements of the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP).
Program Director Message
Welcome and thank you for your interest in the Neonatology Residency Training Program at Shifa International Hospital. I am proud to be running this highly competitive and highly desired residency program. Our aim is to provide training of the highest quality through hands-on experience leading to emergence of qualified academic professional who later can produce safe, internationally accepted immunology laboratory results in area relating to solid organ transplants, bone marrow and stem cell transplants, immune deficiency diseases, autoimmune disease, allergy and para-protein related diseases. Not only this, the trained individual is motivated to develop with great interpersonal skills to rationally efficiently interact with colleagues practicing the art and science of medicine in the relevant fields.
To develop outstanding academic neonatologists who both excel at clinical medicine and who will advance the field of neonatal-perinatal medicine through their scholarly endeavors. We aim to prepare broadly trained candidates that will be successful in becoming subspecialists by taking CPSP subspecialty exams while fostering a lifelong interest in academic neonatology. We would continue to improve the clinical and educational opportunities provided within the fellowship while optimizing the wellness of the individual fellow and community of fellows as a whole.
Is to train outstanding fellows who are equipped to pursue their long-term career objectives. We will recruit fellows interested in an academic career who can best take advantage of the many resources currently available and develop systems to promote the discipline of Neonatology and Pediatrics in general and help improve the current level and standard of care available to our newborns.
We expect and promote excellence in academic fields like patient care, medical education, and research. Through autonomy in our high acuity units, the extension of our catchment area and the spectrum of diseases that are continuously being referred to our tertiary care center our trainees will become comfortable with all aspects of clinical care, patient management of all neonatal clinical entities, procedures, interactions with consultants and members of the care team, family counseling, ethics, and follow-up care. In addition, as communication is a key aspect of providing care and passing on knowledge, fellows will have the opportunity to teach multiple levels of learners including parents, residents, colleagues, medical students, house officers, and faculty. Finally, each fellow will graduate with an area of expertise, centered on an individualized research project. This area of expertise is intended to serve as a starting point for a long-term academic career trajectory.

In addition to a very strong Neonatology team consisting of five consultants, one assistant consultant and four SMO’s our Pediatric department currently has the following in-house disciplines available to promote, educate and train our fellows:
Infectious diseases, Cardiology, Gastroenterology, Nephrology, Urology, Dermatology
Hematology/Oncology, Pediatric surgery, and a dedicated Pediatric emergency.
Outline of Training:
The training is going to be a combination of didactic lectures from curriculum topics, ward rounds, clinical case discussions and supervised procedural experience.
- Fellows lectures and journal club: The fellows will present lectures from the core curriculum on a weekly basis. This will be followed by a case discussion of patients with similar problems. Once a week in the journal club recent articles published in the premier journal of the specialty will be discussed.
- Clinical Cases: Each fellow will assess patients in clinics and discuss their management with the supervisors. He/she will assist in patient’s management and will follow the disease process to gain maximum experience in that condition.
- Procedural Skills: Fellows will review the patients pre-procedure and discuss their management with Supervisors. They will then assist or perform the procedure under supervision. They will review the patient post-procedure to learn about the disease process.
- CPCs and Morbidity and Mortality Meetings: Participation in CPCs are mandatory for all fellows and consultants in the department of Paediatrics. In the monthly M&M meetings all serious complications and deaths are discussed and strategies made to improve protocol and prevent, if possible such complications in the future.
- Perinatal meetings: Perinatal meetings in conjunction with OB/GYN department are held every month. Fellows will collect data, and conduct perinatal meetings with the help of Paediatric and OB/GYN residents and consultants.
- Interdepartmental and National meetings: The fellows will participate and present case in inter departmental meeting on every Monday. They will also attend and present in National & International Paediatric critical care conferences.
Training Year wise training objectives for skills and knowledge will be followed as defined in the booklet prepared for Immunology FCPS training by CPSP
Our morning rounds are joined by clinical pharmacists, Speech therapists, Physio therapists, Respiratory therapists, medical students, house officers, Pediatric residents and NICU SMO’s on daily basis. We currently have twenty-two beds for admissions that would be increased to thirty-nine beds in the near future. We enjoy the privilege of having the state of the art equipment in our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Our statistics reflect outcome results that are comparable to the best and most reputable hospitals around the world. Our research helps pediatricians and pediatric subspecialists around the country and around the world to treat children’s diseases, conditions and disorders. Our fellows once trained are going to bring a good name to our institution and in the long run will help to change the face of Neonatology in Pakistan.
Residents are evaluated by faculty every month, based on their rotation. Feedback is provided by the Programme Director and Coordinator, every 3 months.
