Liver Transplant & HPB Program

The Medical Education department under the leadership of the Director works to ensure that our system of postgraduate medical education is established according to the internationally acceptable criteria and meet all the requirements of the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP).

Program Director Message

Dr. Nusrat Yar Khan

The program offers the opportunity for fellows to perform, consult, conduct, and interpret under close supervision, all procedures in cross sectional imaging.
The program offers several intradepartmental and interdepartmental conferences in which fellows participate on a regular basis. There is a weekly oncology tumor board, Gastrointestinal Meeting and Neuroradiology/Neurology/Neurosurgery Conference during which problem cases are discussed with input from all services. Fellows are required to present the radiological aspects of cases that are discussed in clinical conferences. They should also prepare clinically or pathologically proved cases for inclusion in the teaching files.

The objective of training in this subspecialty of Liver Transplan & HPB is to provide fellows with an organized, comprehensive and highly supervised educational experience in cross sectional imaging with special emphasis on CT, MRI and Doppler ultrasounds and to provide them with opportunities and skills for research in cross sectional imaging.

One year program leading to fellowship in cross sectional Imaging.

Outline of Training:

  1. There is sufficient number of new and follow up patients to ensure adequate inpatient and outpatient experience. Such patients are expected to have a large variety of diseases requiring radiological work-up. There will be faculty supervision of fellows in both evaluating and follow-up of these patients.
  2. There is a fully equipped and staffed Radiology department having state of the art equipments to provide conventional and cross sectional imaging facilities for the patients. These include 2 CT scanners, 2 MRI units, multiple ultrasound machines with Doppler facility, Angiography, Fluoroscopy, Conventional X-rays and Nuclear medicine.
  3. Computers are available with appropriate software to allow fellows to record results of procedures along with internet facilities.
  4. Appropriate facilities and able faculty are available to provide training and support in research.

The programme is run by Programme Director. This in turn is supervised by the Postgraduate Medical Education Department of Shifa International Hospital. We aim to maintain Quality assurance through trainee questionnaires, supervisors’ feedback and regular PGME assessment.

Fellows will provide night call cover to residents at their turn like all other Assistant and Associate consultant radiologists and will provide necessary services as required.

The fellows are evaluated three monthly with internal assessment. In addition, each fellow undertakes a MCQs exam by well-trained consultants in the end of year.

Teaching Component:

The fellow is supposed to teach residents formally during morning teaching sessions and also informally during every day rounds on a regular basis.

Feedback on Reporting Standard:

Diagnostic reports generated by fellows will be closely reviewed for content, level of confidence, grammar, and style and feedback will be given for improvement by concerned faculty.
