The Medical Education department under the leadership of the Director works to ensure that our system of postgraduate medical education is established according to the internationally acceptable criteria and meet all the requirements of the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP).

The Cardiology residency programme of the Shifa International Hospital is the most comprehensive training programme of its kind in Pakistan. It aims at providing training in all aspects of clinical and investigational cardiology including echocardiography, nuclear cardiology, invasive cardiology, cardiac electro-physiology, cardiac CT and MRI as well as exposure to cardiac surgery, thereby leading to development of independent, academically qualified and clinically competent cardiologists.

The foundation of our program is a diverse group of faculty that is committed to achieving the highest standards of residency education and training. Each faculty member has achieved national recognition within their fields of expertise.

The main objective of Cardiology residency programme is to produce knowledgeable and skilled cardiologists, who at the end of their training are able to:

  • Independently manage routine and complex acute and chronic cardiac problems.
  • Manage ambulatory cardiac patients independently.
  • Teach/educate students, interns and residents, ancillary staff and patients.
  • Learn and practice preventive cardiology.
  • Manage pre- and post-operative cardiac and hemodynamic complications in cardiac and non-cardiac surgical patients.
  • Independently perform and interpret non-invasive cardiac diagnostic procedures, e.g. ETT, Echo, Stress echo, trans-esophageal echo (TEE), ambulatory blood pressure (ABPM) , ECG monitoring (Holter monitor) and nuclear cardiac imaging.
  • Independently perform central line insertion with bedside hemodynamic monitoring, temporary pacemaker insertion, and pericardiocentesis
  • Independently perform right and left cardiac catheterization.
  • Observe and assist in coronary, valvular interventions, electrophysiological studies/ablations and device implantation
  • Understand the basic principles of research; design and conduct of a study to the final stages of manuscript writing and publication.
  • Devote extended (elective) time in an area of interest and/or acquire in-depth skills in nuclear cardiology, stress echo, trans-esophageal echo, cardiac electrophysiology and other centers of excellence.

The selected candidates are required to undergo a comprehensive training for a period of three years. Rotations are in accordance with the rules of the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Pakistan. Residents are expected to maintain e-log of clinical and procedural activity with decreasing levels of supervision, as they advance from year III to Year V. Additionally, sequestered time is provided for research and electives.

Each resident is expected to remain on-call in the hospital premises once in four nights. The reporting time of residents is 8 am.

The residents are evaluated three monthly with internal assessment. In addition, each resident undertakes an MCQ exam by European board of urology and an end of year written assessment and oral/viva examination at the end of the year. ​

4. Candidate may partially fill the form and save it on-line for resuming filling out the form later using login credentials.
5. Once the on-line application form is filled and submitted, candidate would be able to take a printout.
6. The hard copy of the on-line application form along with the required documents mentioned in the Application Form must be submitted to the PGME Office, Medical Staff Affairs either personally, through friends/relatives or through reliable courier service.

7. Check your junk emails (in case of email not received).

All residents are encouraged to get involved in audits and research projects, however research project as per CPSP requirements is mandatory for all.

  • MBBS or equivalent.
  • One year House Job
  • Two years training in Internal Medicine
  • Eligible to appear in Medicine Intermediate Module examination (IMM)
