The Medical Education department under the leadership of the Director works to ensure that our system of postgraduate medical education is established according to the internationally acceptable criteria and meet all the requirements of the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP).
Program Director Message
Welcome and thank you for your interest in the Infectious disease Residency Training Program at Shifa International Hospital. I am proud to be running this highly competitive and highly desired residency program. Our aim is to provide training of the highest quality through hands-on experience leading to emergence of qualified academic professional who later can produce safe, internationally accepted immunology laboratory results in area relating to solid organ transplants, bone marrow and stem cell transplants, immune deficiency diseases, autoimmune disease, allergy and para-protein related diseases. Not only this, the trained individual is motivated to develop with great interpersonal skills to rationally efficiently interact with colleagues practicing the art and science of medicine in the relevant fields.

The training is going to be a combination of dedicated lectures from curriculum topics, ward rounds, clinical case discussions and supervised outpatient consultations.
1. Fellows case presentations and journal club: The fellows will present cases from the core curriculum on weekly basis. This will be followed by a case discussion of patients with similar problems. Once a week in the journal club recent articles published in the premier journal of the specialty will be discussed.
2. Clinical Cases: Each fellow will assess patients in clinics and discuss their management with the supervisor. He will assist in patient’s management and will follow the disease process to gain maximum experience in that condition.
3. CPCs and Morbidity and Mortality meetings: Participation in CPCs are mandatory for all fellows and consultants. In the monthly M&M meetings all serious complications and deaths will be discussed and strategies will be made to improve protocol and prevent, if possible such complications in the future.
4. Mandatory rotations in disciplines: Each fellow will be required to do mandatory rotations in microbiology, public health, transplant program and HIV / TB control program as per CPSP infectious diseases curriculum requirements.
5. Interdepartmental and National meetings: The fellows will participate and present in annual MMIDSP (Medical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases Society of Pakistan) conference & other national and international infection diseases conferences.
6. Research and publications: Each fellow will be required to complete research programs as per CPSP infectious diseases curriculum requirements.
Each resident does an average of one night in four on-calls within the Hospital premises, although occasionally one night in three or two may be necessary.
Residents are evaluated by faculty every month, based on their rotation. Feedback is provided by the Programme Director and Coordinator, every 3 months.
Annual TOACS and Year end PGME exams are conducted. In addition, formative assessments based on assorted topics may be arranged every 2-3 months.
Candidates are required to fill on-line application form. Please follow the steps mentioned below:

3. A candidate can apply for only one program at a time.
4. Candidate may partially fill the form and save it on-line for resuming filling out the form later using login credentials.
5.Once the on-line application form is filled and submitted, candidate would be able to take a printout.
6. The hard copy of the on-line application form along with the required documents mentioned in the Application Form must be submitted to the PGME Office, Medical Staff Affairs either personally, through friends/relatives or through reliable courier service.

We plan to take two fellows a year. They should have cleared their FCPS Part II in General Medicine. They will be selected from among the applicants after short listing and a formal interview. Final selections will be made taking into consideration their references, publications, suitability for the program and their aspirations.
