Program Director Message
Welcome and thank you for your interest in the Infectious disease Residency Training Program at Shifa International Hospital. I am proud to be running this highly competitive and highly desired residency program. Our aim is to provide training of the highest quality through hands-on experience leading to emergence of qualified academic professional who later can produce safe, internationally accepted immunology laboratory results in area relating to solid organ transplants, bone marrow and stem cell transplants, immune deficiency diseases, autoimmune disease, allergy and para-protein related diseases. Not only this, the trained individual is motivated to develop with great interpersonal skills to rationally efficiently interact with colleagues practicing the art and science of medicine in the relevant fields.
The aim of our fellowship program is to train fellows in infectious diseases through a comprehensive and well-rounded balance of structured education, clinical experience and research. The primary goal is to train competent fellows who will be well-prepared to pass their Final Fellowship examination in Infectious diseases and be safe enough to act as a consultant infectious disease physician. These specialists will be sufficiently academically equipped for further teaching as well. These specialists will be expected to function at a superior level of competence throughout their careers and become leaders in the field of infectious diseases, microbiology, infection control and public health. The philosophy of the program is founded on the principle that the patient’s interest is paramount in clinical teaching and medical practice.

The training is going to be a combination of dedicated lectures from curriculum topics, ward rounds, clinical case discussions and supervised outpatient consultations.
1. Fellows case presentations and journal club: The fellows will present cases from the core curriculum on weekly basis. This will be followed by a case discussion of patients with similar problems. Once a week in the journal club recent articles published in the premier journal of the specialty will be discussed.
2. Clinical Cases: Each fellow will assess patients in clinics and discuss their management with the supervisor. He will assist in patient’s management and will follow the disease process to gain maximum experience in that condition.
3. CPCs and Morbidity and Mortality meetings: Participation in CPCs are mandatory for all fellows and consultants. In the monthly M&M meetings all serious complications and deaths will be discussed and strategies will be made to improve protocol and prevent, if possible such complications in the future.
4. Mandatory rotations in disciplines: Each fellow will be required to do mandatory rotations in microbiology, public health, transplant program and HIV / TB control program as per CPSP infectious diseases curriculum requirements.
5. Interdepartmental and National meetings: The fellows will participate and present in annual MMIDSP (Medical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases Society of Pakistan) conference & other national and international infection diseases conferences.
6. Research and publications: Each fellow will be required to complete research programs as per CPSP infectious diseases curriculum requirements.

These sessions will be an opportunity to discuss the performance and clinical utility of the laboratory tests.
Laboratory demonstrations: Laboratory demonstrations will be scheduled six days a week. All work will be supervised by a consultant and residents will learn first-hand the art of an efficient and thorough preparation and performance of laboratory tests leading to the establishment of diagnosis or monitoring of disease activity utilising a variety of immunological laboratory techniques. Residents will be able to see the results of correct and timely preparation and delivery of laboratory results in the follow-up investigations and in their rotations through the relevant clinics.
CPCs and Morbidity and Mortality Meetings Weekly participation in CPCs are mandatory for all residents and consultants in the department of medicine. The residents will participate and present case in Immunology meeting on every Monday. They will also attend and present in National & International Immunology/ Pathology conferences.
This will be on the basis of performance in fellow’s presentations, journal clubs, work based assessments and their performance in clinics and rounds. The progress of the fellows will be assessed quarterly by the supervisor using a hospital Performa for performance evaluation and feedback. A formal written examination will be held quarterly to assess the theoretical knowledge and the results of the exam will be discussed with the fellows. If a fellow fails one examination, he or she will be put on probation and counselled for improvement.
Year wise training objectives for skills and knowledge will be followed as per CPSP infectious diseases curriculum requirements.
Each resident does an average of one night in four on-calls within the Hospital premises, although occasionally one night in three or two may be necessary.
- Residents are evaluated by faculty every month, based on their rotation. Feedback is provided by the Programme Director and Coordinator, every 3 months.
- Annual TOACS and Year end PGME exams are conducted. In addition, formative assessments based on assorted topics may be arranged every 2-3 months.

4. Candidate may partially fill the form and save it on-line for resuming filling out the form later using login credentials.
5.Once the on-line application form is filled and submitted, candidate would be able to take a printout.
6. The hard copy of the on-line application form along with the required documents mentioned in the Application Form must be submitted to the PGME Office, Medical Staff Affairs either personally, through friends/relatives or through reliable courier service.

All residents are encouraged to get involved in audits and research projects, however research project as per CPSP requirements is mandatory for all.
We plan to take two fellows a year. They should have cleared their FCPS Part II in General Medicine. They will be selected from among the applicants after short listing and a formal interview. Final selections will be made taking into consideration their references, publications, suitability for the program and their aspirations.
