Welcome and thank you for your interest in the Medicine Residency Training Program at Shifa International Hospital. I am proud to be running this highly competitive and highly desired residency program. Our aim is to provide training of the highest quality through hands-on experience leading to emergence of qualified academic professional who later can produce safe, internationally accepted immunology laboratory results in area relating to solid organ transplants, bone marrow and stem cell transplants, immune deficiency diseases, autoimmune disease, allergy and para-protein related diseases. Not only this, the trained individual is motivated to develop with great interpersonal skills to rationally efficiently interact with colleagues practicing the art and science of medicine in the relevant fields.

The aim of our residency program is to train residents in the art and science of Medicine through a comprehensive and well-rounded balance of structured education, laboratory and clinical experience and research. The primary goal is to train competent Immunologists who will be well-prepared to pass their Final Fellowship examination in Immunology, be safe enough to act as a consultant immunologist in a hospital based laboratory or at an immunology laboratory in a tertiary care center. These specialists will be sufficiently academically equipped for further training towards either sub specialization or a teaching career. The ultimate goal is to produce excellent, ethical immunologists capable of providing a primarily diagnostic service for a wide spectrum of problems relating to immunodeficiency diseases, autoimmune diseases including connective tissue disorders, allergy, Para protein related problems, immunophenotyping related services and transplant related services. These specialists will be expected to function at a superior level of competence throughout their careers, become leaders in their field of interest, and further the course of the specialty of immunology. The philosophy of the program is founded on the principle that the patient’s interest is paramount in clinical teaching and medical practice.

The training is going to be a combination of didactic lectures, Laboratory demonstrations, rotation through Allergy and Immunology and Rheumatology clinics, clinical case discussions and supervised laboratory experience.

The residents will present lectures from the core curriculum on a weekly basis. This will be followed by a case discussion of patients with similar problems. Once a week in the journal club recent articles published in the premier journal of the specialty will be discussed.

These sessions will be an opportunity to discuss the performance and clinical utility of the laboratory tests.

Laboratory demonstrations: Laboratory demonstrations will be scheduled six days a week. All work will be supervised by a consultant and residents will learn first-hand the art of an efficient and thorough preparation and performance of laboratory tests leading to the establishment of diagnosis or monitoring of disease activity utilising a variety of immunological laboratory techniques. Residents will be able to see the results of correct and timely preparation and delivery of laboratory results in the follow-up investigations and in their rotations through the relevant clinics.

CPCs and Morbidity and Mortality Meetings Weekly participation in CPCs are mandatory for all residents and consultants in the department of medicine. In the monthly M&M meetings all serious complications and deaths are discussed and strategies made to improve protocol and prevent, if possible such complications in the future.

 

The residents will participate and present case in Immunology meeting on every Monday. They will also attend and present in National & International Immunology/ Pathology conferences.

This will be on the basis of performance in resident presentations, journal clubs, and performance on laboratory bench and authorization sessions. The progress of the residents will be assessed quarterly by the supervisor using a hospital Performa for performance evaluation A formal written examination will be held quarterly to assess the theoretical knowledge and the results of the exam will be discussed with the residents. If a resident fails one examination, he or she will be put on probation and counselled for improvement.

Training Year wise training objectives for skills and knowledge will be followed as defined in the booklet prepared for Immunology FCPS training by CPSP.

Each resident does an average of one night in four on-calls within the Hospital premises, although occasionally one night in three or two may be necessary.

  • Residents are evaluated by faculty every month, based on their rotation. Feedback is provided by the Programme Director and Coordinator, every 3 months.
  • Annual TOACS and Year end PGME exams are conducted. In addition, formative assessments based on assorted topics may be arranged every 2-3 months.

Candidates are required to fill on-line application form. Please follow the steps mentioned below:

3. A candidate can apply for only one program at a time.
4. Candidate may partially fill the form and save it on-line for resuming filling out the form later using login credentials.
5.Once the on-line application form is filled and submitted, candidate would be able to take a printout.
6. The hard copy of the on-line application form along with the required documents mentioned in the Application Form must be submitted to the PGME Office, Medical Staff Affairs either personally, through friends/relatives or through reliable courier service.
7. Check your junk emails (in case of email not received).

All residents are encouraged to get involved in audits and research projects, however research project as per CPSP requirements is mandatory for all.
